Browsing through pergola kits to enhance your home may feel overwhelming, but if you keep your motivations in mind, the perfect pergola design will easily stand out to you. If you are looking to enhance a small area of your yard, consider a pergola on the smaller end of the spectrum, a petite pergola performs just as much work as a grandiose one as long as it is positioned appropriately. If you own a home with more square acreage, a larger pergola will better complement your space. A puny pergola next to a large home may feel more like an afterthought than an intentional design element. Keep in mind that the pergola that will function best for you should highlight strengths of your property and minimize weaknesses.
Step 1. Choose Style (Attached or Freestanding)
As you navigate your options for complementing your property with a pergola kit, one major decision-making factor is whether you want an attached or freestanding structure.
Step 2. Choose Dimensions
Select the width and depth dimensions for your pergola.
Please select the width (W) and depth (D) dimensions for your attached pergola. Please note that width and depth are NOT interchangeable. The pergola attaches to your home (or other structure) on the width side, and the shade purlins run the width of the pergola. Please review the image below to see the location of the home/structure, the placement of the posts and the direction that the shade purlins run.
Attached pergolas up to 20' wide have 2 posts: one in each corner of the side that is not attached. Attached pergolas ranging from 24' to 32' wide have 3 posts: one in each corner plus one in the center of the unattached side. Click here to see simple CAD drawings for each width-depth combination.
Please select the width (W) and depth (D) dimensions for your freestanding pergola. Please note that width and depth are NOT interchangeable. The shade purlins run the width of the pergola. Please review the image below to see the placement of the posts and the direction that the shade purlins run.
Freestanding pergolas up to 20' wide have 4 posts: one in each corner. Freestanding pergolas ranging from 24' to 32' wide have 6 posts: one in each corner plus one in the center on each side (on the width side). Click here to see simple CAD drawings for each width-depth combination.

Step 3. Choose Shade
Shade is produced by the spacing between shade purlins, the slanted sections that break up the structure of the top of the pergola. The larger the space between purlins, the more sunlight will be allowed through. This can have either a complementary or devastating effect on the landscape below the pergola.
Step 4. Choose Post Design
Select the width (5", 7" or 10"), shape (square or round) and style (with or without trim ring) for your posts.
Step 5. Choose Color
Our vinyl pergola kits come in white and tan. You can't go wrong with either!
Step 6. Add Fan Mounts or High-Wind Brackets?
Add Built-In Fan Mounts?
Would you like any built-in fan mounts? Your pergola can include up to 3 fan mounts (fans not included). Each fan mount will add $60 (white) to $70 (tan) to the cost.
Fan mount integration - We offer up to integrate three fan mounts per pergola. Fan mounts keep the space below a pergola cooled, breaking up heat. You may want to consider adding fan mounts to your pergola package if you live in a particularly humid region, or if your summer nights tend to be unusually hot. Our fan mounts allow you to decide on the specific fan you want to include in your pergola, so that you can pick something that perfectly complements your home, porch, or yard. Perhaps you don’t live in a particularly hot area, but you want your pergola to impart a transitioning effect from your house to your yard - fans provide the illusion of being inside, which works well if you intend to host guests under your pergola.
Add High Wind Brackets?
Do you live in an area that can have winds in excess of 80 MPH? If so, we recommend adding high-wind brackets. (Click here for more information.)
Whereas pergola fans are more of an aesthetic and comfort choice, high wind brackets are more practical. Our pergola kits are fit to withstand typical weather conditions in most regions of the United States, and unless you live in a region that experiences winds of 80+ MPH, you don’t need to include high wind brackets. However, if from time to time your house is subjected to winds at those speeds, we encourage you to include high wind brackets. Paying a little extra to extend the lifetime of your pergola is definitely worth it. If you live in a region that regularly or even occasionally experiences violent thunderstorms, windstorms, hurricanes, or tornadoes, high wind brackets are for you!
