The backyard patio pergola does not need to be exactly 12' x 12' like in the images on this page. The kit includes 12 4x4 insert brackets . While the images on this page show that all 12 brackets are used to add 6 square inline 4x4 roof rafters to your pergola (covering a span of 12' with standard spacing between rafters), you can use the brackets any way you'd like (i.e. adding a privacy wall or half/partial wall, adding a side railing, etc.).
