Not Included in this Kit

Wood - Lumber is a) very expensive to ship and b) readily available to most people at local home improvement and building supply stores. By buying your wood locally, you also have more options on the exact type of wood you'd like that is appropriate for your area's climate.

Anchoring Hardware - While this pergola kit does include stainless steel wood screws for securing 4x4" wood posts into the brackets, it does not include anchoring hardware for securing the base brackets into a secure base (i.e. cement pad, deck, landscape toppers, concrete footing, etc.). This is because the anchoring hardware you need will vary based on a) what type of material you're going into and b) local building codes.

Required Lumber & Estimated Cost

As noted above, wood (lumber) is NOT included in this covered pergola kit, nor is the hardware you'll need to anchor the base brackets to a secure foundation. Before you can build your summer shade pergola, you'll need to purchase the following items from a local building supply store or lumber yard (assuming you plan to build a 24' x 24' pergola that is 8' tall):

Nine (9) 8' long 4x4 posts
Sixty-two (62) 12' long 4x4 posts
Anchoring hardware (36 pieces)

The estimated cost for the above lumber and anchoring hardware is $2,430. This is only an estimate; actual costs will vary depending on the type of wood you decide to buy, your location, local stores & availability, and various other factors.

This bracket & hardware kit for a backyard pergola will accommodate any free-standing pergola ranging from 13-24 feet by 13-24 feet. The pergola for backyard shade does not need to be exactly 24' x 24' like in the images on this page.

The kit includes 100 4x4 insert brackets. While the images on this page show that 48 of these brackets are used to add 24 square inline 4x4 roof rafters to your pergola (6 rafters to each of the four roof sections, all a 12' span with standard spacing between rafters) and the remaining 52 brackets are used to add two privacy walls with 13 square 4x4 slats each (both 8' tall with standard spacing between slats), you can use the brackets any way you'd like (i.e. adding another privacy wall or half/partial wall, adding a side railing, etc.).
