The patio shade pergola does not need to be exactly 36' x 12' like in the images on this page. The kit includes 24 4x4 insert brackets . While the images on this page show that all 24 brackets are used to add 12 square inline 4x4 roof rafters to your pergola (4 rafters to each of the three roof sections, all a 12' span with far spacing between rafters), you can use the brackets any way you'd like (i.e. adding a privacy wall or half/partial wall, adding a side railing, etc.).
