Additional Information

Not Included in this Kit

Wood - Lumber is a) very expensive to ship and b) readily available to most people at local home improvement and building supply stores. By buying your wood locally, you also have more options on the exact type of wood you'd like that is appropriate for your area's climate.

Anchoring Hardware - While this pergola kit does include stainless steel wood screws for securing 4x4 (and 2x4, if applicable) lumber into the brackets, it does not include anchoring hardware for securing the base brackets into a secure base (i.e. cement pad, deck, landscape toppers, concrete footing, etc.) or for securing the wall mount brackets to the outside wall of your home. This is because the anchoring hardware you need will vary based on a) what type of material you're going into and b) local building codes.

Required Lumber & Estimated Cost

As noted above, wood (lumber) is NOT included in this bracket kit for building a large wood pergola, nor is the hardware you'll need to anchor the base brackets and wall mount brackets. Before you can build your large 4-block pergola, you'll need to purchase the following items from a local building supply store or lumber yard (assuming you plan to build a 12' x 12' pergola that is 8' tall):

Six (6) 8' long 4x4 posts
Ten (10) 12' long 4x4 posts
Sixty-four (64) 12' long 2x4 slats
Anchoring hardware (36 pieces)

The estimated cost for the above lumber and anchoring hardware is $1,037. This is only an estimate; actual costs will vary depending on the type of wood you decide to buy, your location, local stores & availability, and various other factors.

This Do-It-Yourself kit for building a big backyard pergola will accommodate any attached pergola ranging from 13-24 feet wide by 13-24 feet deep. The wood pergola does not need to be exactly 24' x 24' like in the images on this page.

The kit includes 30 2x4 rafter brackets so you can add 10 traditional roof rafters atop the beams of the pergola (each rafter running the full 24' width, with far spacing between rafters). It also includes 40 2x4 insert brackets so you can add two privacy walls with 10 slats each (both 8' tall with far spacing between slats). If desired, you could reduce the number of slats on the privacy walls and use some of the insert brackets to add a side railing or another full/partial privacy wall. You can also purchase additional 2x4 insert brackets here.
