The backyard patio pergola does not need to be exactly 12' x 12' like in the images on this page. The kit includes 8 4x4 rafter brackets to add 4 beams to the pergola roof plus 22 2x4 rafter brackets so you can add inline 11 2x4 roof rafters atop those beams (perpendicular to the beams), thus forming a traditional 3-tier pergola roof.
