Additional Information

Not Included in this Kit

Wood - Lumber is a) very expensive to ship and b) readily available to most people at local home improvement and building supply stores. By buying your wood locally, you also have more options on the exact type of wood you'd like that is appropriate for your area's climate.

Anchoring Hardware - While this pergola kit does include stainless steel wood screws for securing 4x4" wood posts into the brackets, it does not include anchoring hardware for securing the base brackets into a secure base (i.e. cement pad, deck, landscape toppers, concrete footing, etc.). This is because the anchoring hardware you need will vary based on a) what type of material you're going into and b) local building codes.

Required Lumber & Estimated Cost

As noted above, wood (lumber) is NOT included in this DIY kit for a small pergola for patio, nor is the hardware you'll need to anchor the base brackets to a secure foundation. Before you can build your pergola, you'll need to purchase the following items from a local building supply store or lumber yard (assuming you plan to build a 12' x 12' pergola that is 8' tall):

  • Four (4) 8' long 4x4 posts
  • Eight (8) 12' long 4x4 posts
  • Five (5) 12' long 2x4 slats
  • Anchoring hardware (16 pieces)

The estimated cost for these items is $444. This is only an estimate; actual costs will vary depending on your location, the type of wood you decide to buy, local stores & availability, and various other factors.

This DIY bracket kit for a small pergola for patio will accommodate any free-standing pergola ranging from 8-12 feet wide by 8-12 feet deep. The pergola does not need to be exactly 12' x 12' like in the images on this page.

The kit includes 8 4x4 rafter brackets to add 4 beams to the pergola roof plus 10 2x4 rafter brackets so you can add inline 5 2x4 roof rafters atop those beams (perpendicular to the beams), thus forming a traditional 3-tier pergola roof. For closer 2x4 rafter spacing and more shade, you can purchase additional 2x4 rafter brackets here.
