Overview
This pergola side railing kit is comprised of a) two horizontal 4x4 posts across the top and bottom of the railing, plus b) 4-12 vertical slats/posts inserted between those horizontal 4x4s. The vertical wood can be either 2x4 slats (secured by 2x4 insert brackets) OR 4x4 posts (secured with 4x4 insert brackets). The top and bottom horizontal 4x4s are always secured with 4x4 insert brackets. Pergola railings are typically 36 inches tall (measured from the ground to the top of the upper 4x4 post).

Wood - Lumber is a) very expensive to ship and b) readily available to most people at local home improvement and building supply stores. By buying your wood locally, you also have more options on the exact type of wood you'd like that is appropriate for your area's climate.
Base & Corner Brackets - The 2 base brackets and 2 corner 3-arm brackets shown in these images are for illustration purposes only. They are not included in this pergola railing kit.
